Hundreds of schoolchildren in St. Lucia were given an opportunity last week, to learn something new about the humane treatment of animals. Rachel Fensome, (pictured here talking to children at the Anse la Raye Infants School) was one of the veterinary nurses from the UK who volunteered her vacation time, and paid her own airfare to come to St. Lucia to assist SLAPS in spreading the animal welfare message to schools around the island.
Whilst Rachel and SLAPS volunteers Maria Grech and Pam Devaux were visiting seven schools on the island, the other 7 IVA volunteers were treating and spaying and neutering dogs and cats in Anse la Raye and Gros Islet.
SLAPS volunteers and sponsors once again pulled out all the stops to ensure the efficient running of the clinic, and in the short space of 6-and-a-half working days, a record 123 animals were treated.
The overseas volunteers were treated to luxurious accommodation at the Royal St. Lucian Resort and Spa and Ti Kaye Village. They experienced a whale and dolphin watch, courtesy of Captain Mike's and a wonderful sunset cruise on the Brig Unicorn.
The equipment and supplies were transported by Philgence Transport & Equipment Services Ltd. Bottled water was donated by Caribbean Springs and cooled by a refrigerator on loan from Courts. Transfers to the airport were generously provided by Sunlink. Service with a smile and a perfect mode of transportation were provided by Drive-A-Matic Car Rentals who continue their support for the initiative.
Two more clinics are scheduled for 2003. To become a SLAPS volunteer or for more information, please call 457-7527.
